It’s fairly easy. He has to forward a special request chit up the chain of command. If the dates are approved by his division officer, he’s good to go.

His command pays for transportation to his next duty station. He has to pay his way anywhere else.

You take leave. You get like 1/2 day a month of leave accrued each and every month so when you have like two weeks built up, you take a week and haul ****.

Seabee, YN or AZ? They will probably give him leave right out of A school to come home and see family before he is transfered out to Hawaii, atleast that is what they did for me, 14 days leave time.

Enjoy it while he’s out in Hawaii, I’ve been there on deployment before, beautiful.

It’s been over 15 years since I got out of the Navy, but at that time, when you finished your school and got orders to you next duty station (most likely a ship), you got to take leave. They gave us 30 days of leave, and you could choose to use it all or cut it short.

As for paying for the airfare, they only pay for travelling expenses from the current duty station to the next. They don’t pay for the trip home and then from there to where ever he is stationed next. Military hops are available, but he would fly on a stand-by basis. If there was no room, he would not get a seat. It is a good, cheap way to fly, but don’t rely on it to get him to his next duty station on time. If he can’t get a seat on a military hop, and he is late reporting, it is his fault and he will be counted as being UA (Unauthorized Abscense).

If he signed up in Hawaii, they will send him home for his leave after his training, If he’s been in for awhile, and doing re-training, then that’s different. The military pays for troops to go home after training, and he can catch a military flight after that for almost free as long as he’s in active duty. I don’t know of ‘stand by’ in the military, but it might exist, I just used to jump on cargo flights, sometimes had to help load the plane for a ride. You should take her for a scenic walk on the beach in Hawaii, and the whole time talk about how you miss the beach house in Cali., and really drive it in that you wish you were there. Then at dinner that night slip a key on her plate or something and tell her it’s the key to the beach house!

Or, before you leave for Hawaii, send a postcard from Cali. to the hotel you are staying at, and when you check in, the concierge will tell her she has mail, and write a little note saying something like “can’t wait till you get here” or something like that. She will be totally surprised!

Any way you do it, she will be totally blown away, and you guys will have a blast!!

Aha. Ground Radio Repair, no doubt, at Biloxi. Usually there is leave time that can be taken at the end of tech school before he goes on to his assignment. He’ll have asked, believe me! And will have been told what the current policy is. Yes, he’ll have to pay his own airfare – the only time the service will pay is for a permanent change of station. In his case, they’ll give him some travel pay, but that would only pay for going from Mississippi directly to his new duty station. Standby may or may not be an option – he’ll have to check with the airlines. Good luck to you both – hope you get together soon!

They will probably give him leave automatically, and if he asks early enough could may get a large amount of time. Navy is usually not an ask and you get it kind of organization, like if his new station is a ship set to sail then maybe no leave. Yeah he can fly in lotsa cheaper ways if you are willing to wait. Military HOPS are available. If home is on the way to his next duty station it is probably free.

honestly, not to scare you, the quality of life can be a bit tough sometimes. high cost of gas, living, among other things. you said you are moving out here in 2-3 yrs. i dont know what the job outlook would be, hopefully better than it is now. encouraging news is that with both of you having degrees, you are already ahead of a lot of people, you wont find too much trouble in that. but i think you’ll find hawaii to be a friendly place with a very unique (in a good way) culture.
