A Hunt for THE ELIXIR OF LIFE

ROS or free radicals as they are commonly known as, are molecules that include
oxygen ions as well as peroxides and are a normal
byproduct of the metabolic process in the cells of the
body. These free radicals are very reactive
and assault the body’s systems setting off chain reactions and
thus altering and damaging the DNA, RNA and cellular proteins. To preserve a fit metabolism, the body must be cleansed from the highly reactive oxygen molecules which are capable of making the free radicals.

Antioxidants are effective at removing
free radicals and can inhibit further oxidation
reactions and therefore terminate the chain reaction.
Consuming foods rich in antioxidants is a
beneficial strategy to tackle the formation of free radicals in the body.
Vitamins E, Vitamin C, Beta- carotene, glutathione, Uric acid, carotenes
and CoQ10 are some of the more recognized antioxidants.

Pomegranates, wolfberry, also known as Goji berry and acai
berries are fruits from nature’s bounty that have been found to be high in
antioxidant content. For ages people have been
using these antioxidant fruits as antidotes for
diverse disorders. Recent studies demonstrate that these antioxidants can do wonders to ward off and reverse the ill- effects of some conditions.
Scientists in Israel have shown that regular intake of a glass of pomegranate juice, considerably cuts the chance of atherosclerosis, the primary killer in North America. An additional useful aspect was the reduction in plaque build- up in those patients who had severe carotid artery stenosis(clogged arteries) .

Still yet another powerful antioxidant drink
comes through the acai berry, a reddish purple fruit, belonging
to the genre of other purple colored fruits similar to
cranberry and blueberry. The ORAC score for acai berry
is a huge 1027 per gram rather than the 105
for pomegranates. Despite the fact that acai
juice has
outstanding antioxidant and anthocyanin levels, studies are still underway to conclusively determine its likely antioxidants health benefits. However, because of its good ORAC value, the possible health advantages of acai juice cannot be
underestimated.
