Biking Bhutan – distances of daily stages

This last fall was a very hectic time of year in Bhutan because of two causes. First it was the King’s wedding and second the rates are going up January 1, 2012.

Bhutan King’s wedding created definite problems for tour operators getting confirmations from lodges and hotels specially in Punakha and Wangdue where the wedding day visitors had to be lodged and the local hotels been required to cater to them ahead of the tourists.

The pressure on amenities and increased quantity of tourists created some ripple effect as more tourists were booked in places like Bumthang. But Bumthang added new rooms, for example Dendupling Guest House.

In any case as demand from customers in Bumthang has definitely increased mainly at these times of the year, the quality of places to stay in Bhutan is still steadily growing as since about couple of years ago after the government endorsed certify only accommodations designed to meet their standard of 3-star minimum. While I can’t attest to that I truly do know that nevertheless, there are some less than 2-star accommodations on the government listing in Bhutan (traditionally in the East), anything newer should be of a certain standard, even if they really have no technically accepted star designations per global star rating, so the fact is the standard is somewhere within 2 and 3 star.

Earlier October and November saw a still additional visitors riding a bike in Bhutan, with quantities of purchased Bhutan biking tours nearly exceeding the amount of tourists signed up for Bhutan trekking tours.

Despite the fact that biking Bhutan is not for the experienced bike riders only, the miles of the daily staging are certainly one issue and the geography another. In order to that travelers have the option to get off the bike whenever and drive in their support motor vehicle and people who subscribe also come in totally different measure of conditioning so it is a good choice to have to get off the bike if necessary and easily ride.

No matter what not one of the Bhutan bike adventures is a Tour de France, you cycle, halt, relish, take snap shots, enjoy lunch, bicycle on…

Following consider the rough biking distance each day on the key legs of Bhutan bike outings:

Paro – Thimphu bike 37 miles

Thimphu – Punakha 45 miles

Punakha – Trongsa 60 miles

Trongsa – Bumthang 42 miles

Bumthang to Ura 58 miles

Bumthang – Wangdue bike 62 miles

Wangdue – Paro bike 77 miles

Not to forget, in October there was a very considerable earthquake in Bhutan. The epicenter was in southern Tibet and northern Sikkim and then there had been many landslides and roads got blocked. Although Bhutan is positioned evidently on the opposite side of huge string of high Himalayan peaks from the epicenter of the earthquake Thimphu described the fact that the tremor was scary and happily there had been no damages or traumas.
